The Messy Middle (0016)
Have you ever set a goal? Sure you have. Here's a more specific question. Have you ever set a goal and lost focus on accomplishing that goal…so much so that you abandoned ship along the way. This was your intent?
Start Finish
But this is what happened.
Start Finish
Here's one of the reasons why? We underestimate the messy middle. It's the part of the journey where your motivation has diminished, and your finish line starts to get fuzzy. It's when that voice in your brain starts to question why. You start to question whether the path is even relevant anymore.
We all go through it. Even in our life journey, we call it a mid-life crisis.
Here's a simple tip for navigating the messy middle.
When you set a goal, write a "why" statement. Don't just focus on what you want to accomplish; write down why it is important to you.
For example, if you want to get in better shape… don't just say I want to lose 10 pounds. Instead, write why that's important to you.
For example, I want to lose 10 pounds because I want to feel better so I can be more present with my children or grandchildren.
I want to retire at 65 because…
I want to reach this goal in my company because…
If you struggle to finish that sentence…ie…clarifying the why…you will struggle to reach the finish line of your goal.
And the next time you find yourself in the messy middle…tempted to abandon the ship, pull out your why statement to remind you of the importance of the journey you are on.
